How are glasses made.

We find the process of developing a pair of prescription glasses an art and a science. The skill, accuracy, mechanical genius and employee knowledge, when combined correctly, produce a fascinating product. In the following article we will show you the machinery used throughout each step of the manufacturing process with a brief description of the steps involved. Enjoy!

The more complex prescriptions go through the following stages, with simpler prescriptions skipping some of the earlier stages:

Stage 1 - We select the lenses from a number of basic variants

Stage 2 - The prescription is entered in an optical software program. The front surface is taped for protection and then a block is applied to the front surface. The block allows the lesn to be "chucked" in a generator-the machine that grinds the correct back curve for the specific prescription

Stage 3 - The correct "tool" is then chosen and the lenses enter the final stage of surfacing. First, we fine the lens in two seperate stages and the last step is to polish the lens to a clear luster.

Stage 4 - The lenses are then taken to the lensometer to ensure that they are optically correct.

Stage 5 - The frame is then traced and the lenses are edged to specific frame specifications.

Stage 6 - Tints and coatings are added by dipping the lenses in dye or coating chemicals that bond to the lens surface.

Stage 7 - The lenses are then inserted in the frame and are checked again at the lensometer for accuracy.
